Murals On Parade
Welcome Celebration
Tuesday, January 5, 2010, 4-5:30PM

VSAarts of New York City is proud to present its 2009 Mural Project. One of the most imaginative programs of VSAarts of New York City was the development of the Annual Murals Project, which stimulated a response from hundreds of classes, celebrating the richly diverse cultures in New York City. Dr. Bebe Bernstein, Director of VSAarts of New York City, extends her appreciation to all of her students, teachers, and administrators who participate and contributed to the success of this project. It demonstrates the sharing spirit of our city.

The Murals on exhibit were created for and displayed at the New York City VSAarts Festivals. This year's theme centered on "Celebrate the Arts in New York City!". Thirteen of these Murals have been selected to be highlighted in the 2010 VSAarts NYC Calendar. The calendar serves to increase public awareness and recognition of the contributions of pupils with disabilities in the arts.

“I’m at the hospital in the nursery watching my mom with my newborn baby sister. I can’t wait to hold her because the window separates us. I chose this scene because it’s a memory I won’t ever forget. I really love being a big brother.”

VSA arts Awards
Fellowships for Teaching Artists with Disabilities

VSA arts announces its 2009-2010 Teaching Artist Fellows: Kemlyn Tan Bappe of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; Tom Harmon of Terry, Mississippi; Richard Jenkins of Cambridge, Massachusetts; Marquetta Johnson of Decatur, Georgia; and Sharon Leary of Geneseo, New York (shown above).

The premier fellowship for teaching artists with disabilities in the nation, the award provides networking support for the artists and professional development opportunities, including a week-long intensive workshop in Washington, D.C. from August 10-14.

Leary, a potter and teaching artist, specializes in functional high-fired pottery that combines elements of American and Asian ceramic traditions. Her ceramic work provides a creative activity for pain management of her chronic acute migraines, as well as an artistic vehicle for expression. Leary works primarily with elementary school students on arts integrated lessons that animate core academics with motivational arts activities.

Learning His Body, Learning to Dance

By NEIL GENZLINGER
Gregg Mozgala, a 31-year-old actor with cerebral palsy, had 12 years of physical therapy while he was growing up. But in the last eight months, a determined choreographer with an unconventional résumé has done what all those therapists could not: She has dramatically changed the way Mr. Mozgala walks.

In the process, she has changed his view of himself and of his possibilities.

Mr. Mozgala and the choreographer, Tamar Rogoff, have been working since last winter on a dance piece called “Diagnosis of a Faun.” It is to have its premiere on Dec. 3 at La MaMa Annex in the East Village, but the more important work of art may be what Ms. Rogoff has done to transform Mr. Mozgala’s body.

“I have felt things that I felt were completely closed off to me for the last 30 years,” he said. “The amount of sensation that comes through the work has been totally unexpected and is really quite wonderful.”
